How many pieces should a gift jigsaw have?

500 pieces for someone who does the odd puzzle, 1000 for a regular, 2000 only for someone who has said so. Larger pieces ("XL") help anyone who finds standard pieces fiddly.

Which jigsaw brands are good quality?

Gibsons and Ravensburger are the two most people trust: thick board, pieces that click, no two shaped alike. An illustrated puzzle from a smaller studio is fine too — the image matters as much as the cut.

Is a jigsaw a good gift for an older relative?

One of the best, and one of the few that gets used the same week. Go for 500 or XL pieces and a scene with plenty of distinct colour areas rather than a sky-heavy photograph.

Jigsaw puzzle gifts

A jigsaw is the gift for someone who wants an evening with no screen in it. The trick is matching the piece count to the person: a thousand pieces is a fortnight for most people and an afternoon for the serious ones.

Everything here is a real puzzle at a real UK price — illustrated ones for people who like a scene, photographic ones for people who like a challenge, and a few XL-piece puzzles that are kinder on the eyes.

Regular puzzlers keep a list of the ones they have done, and so a wishlist of the ones they have not is the most natural thing in the world to ask for.
